Coriander – health benefits

Coriander seeds have a health-supporting reputation that is high on the list of the healing spices. The essential oils in the seed make it an effective carminative and digestive aid. In parts of Europe, coriander has traditionally been referred to as an antidiabetic plant. In parts of India, it has traditionally been used for its antiinflammatory properties. Modern scientific investigations of coriander have focused on its antimicrobial properties, antianxiety action, and cholesterol-lowering effects.

These preliminary studies in animals appear to confirm many of its historical uses. For example, its cholesterol-lowering action is the result of coriander stimulating the conversion of cholesterol to bile acids within the liver, an effect that would likely improve digestion of fat.
